RECONNECTING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WITH NATURE
GOOD OUTDOOR EDUCATION IS EDUCATION 'IN', 'ABOUT', AND 'FOR' THE ENVIRONMENT. WE BELIEVE THAT 'GREAT' OUTDOOR EDUCATION ALSO CONNECTS US 'WITH' THE ENVIRONMENT AND GIVES US A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR TRUE SELF
We believe that Outdoor Education should be a vital element of any well rounded learnng experince for people of all ages. It is now clear that our emotional, spiritual and physical well-being are all effected in a positive way when we spend time in the outdoors; Outdoor Education is closely connected with positive and long term holisitc development. There is also a great need for education to rise to the challenges of climate change and the ecological crisis. Through a variety of programs aimed at students of varying ages we aim to provide memorable experinces in beautiful places that capture students imagination, help them to understand the world we live in, encourage them to care for it and inspire them to find a deeper understanding of themself within it.
JOHN MUIR AWARD- CURRICULUM DAYS-JUNIOR BUSHCRAFT
Gill Evans Head Teacher, Holcombe Brook Primary:
"The children are active, engaged and have reaped so many benefits from sustained outdoor time with both structured and less structured activities. It is difficult for parents to provide this kind of experience these days as children ‘play out’ less for all kinds of reasons.
At the Island the pupils spend quality time with peers and adults, follow and achieve learning objectives without even realizing it! and have brought their practical experiences back into the classroom to stimulate their writing, reading, science and maths skills. Whilst involved in the outdoor sessions our pupils have become visibly more confident and have drawn upon many ‘life skills’ such as cooperation, creative thinking and risk taking.
This is an experience I am aiming for all our pupils to participate in. Danny works so well with children of all ages, is calm, engaging and very creative. I would recommend The Communitree Initiative to any school, group or parent."
