Level 2 Award - Forest School Assistant
provides learners with the skills required to assist Forest School Leaders in Forest School programmes.
Overview
There are 2 units to the qualification (total 7 credits):
- Learning and development
- Practical Skills
As a learner, you are required to:
1) Attend 4 days intensive training
Your training starts with four days at our Turton Tower, Bolton site - this consists of a combination of theory and practical learning.
2) Assist with three consecutive Forest School sessions
This includes planning, delivery, evaluation and observation.
You must organise your forest school placement (where you will be assisting with the three consecutive Forest School sessions ) with a qualified Level 3 Forest School Practitioner prior to commencing the course.
3) Complete a written portfolio
Your portfolio is a collection of evidence demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of the 2 units covered in the course.
Entry requirements
Learners must be at least
18 years old to access the qualification. This is a Forest School Association and Department for Education requirement.
Total qualification time
70 hours
Majority of learners complete the qualification within 6 - 12 months
The total qualification time is the amount of time expected to take, on average, to complete the qualification. This includes:
- guided learning
- assisting three consecutive forest school sessions
- self study
- completion of portfolio

- Understand the structure of woodlands.
- Know how to identify a range of flora and fauna and understand the importance of identification.
- Be able to manage the ecological impact of a Forest School programme.
- Understand the role of risk assessment at Forest School.
- Be able to carry out a site risk assessment and a risk-benefit assessment.
- Be able to apply a range of practical skills relevant to a Forest School Programme.
